Modular Data Recorder

The DATaRec® MDR family from Safran Data Systems sets new standards for flight test instrumentation and represents the next generation of FTI. The product family offers a flexible system that can be equipped with user changeable signal conditioning interfaces to meet a wide range of applications.

The product line starts with the MDR-2s recorder and provides a data acquisition system for the recording of up to 32 channels an ultra compact cockpit mountable housing. Data is recorded in IRIG-106 chapter 10 data format onto a CF card which can be replayed with any PC. The high end of the product line is characterized by the eight slot version MDR-8 whereby the recording is performed onto a removable sealed solid state memory cartridge with a capacity of up to 500 GB.

A wide range of signal modules provide the interfaces to avionic buses like ARINC429 or MIL-STD-1553. Video modules realize the recording of analogue videos (PAL-NTS) or digital videos (HD SDI) using H.264/AVC compression. PCM, Ethernet, Asynchronous and Analogue modules complete the range.

The recorder mainframes offer built-in Ethernet and Voice interfaces. Precision timing is realized by an integrated GPS receiver and an IRIG A, B, G time code generator, IEEE1588 is also supported. A clear man-machine interface with easy control from the front panel and the set up of the system via USB stick or remote software are extended performance features.

A cockpit control unit with integrated solid state cartridge offers remote operation via e-SATA or Ethernet.

The analysis of data can be performed digitally using any IRIG106 chapter 10 compatible software or data can be reconstructed using the replay modules of the HEIM DATaRec®4 series.

  8. Internal ultra capacitor back-up for protection from power supply interruptions.
  9. Wide range of data acquisition modules - e.g. video, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, analogue, video, AFDX/Ethernet, serial digital (e.g. RS232/422, PCM).
  10. Extremely accurate synchronisation (including sampling clock) of multiple chassis.
  11. All data recorded in IRIG 106 Chapter 10 format (THE standard for solid state data recorders).   Allows ready exchange of data between multiple facilities/sites.
  12. MVCR1 video module accepts two channels of composite or Y/C, PAL or NTSC, video, plus two audio channels.
  13. DVD quality recording at 5 Mbit/sec.
  14. Video recorded in standard H.264 (MPEG-4) format.   Digital recordings may be replayed on commercially available media player programmes.
  15. Master chassis includes inputs for RS232/422 (including GPS streams), 2 voice channels, and time codes (IRIG A, B, and G, IEE1588, and GPS).
  16. GPS receiver incorporated in master chassis as standard.
  17. Internal free-running (battery backed-up) clock can be locked to external serial GPS and IRIG A, B, or G time sources.
  18. All external serial GPS data (including lat/long etc.) is recorded.
  19. Time may be overlaid onto the video recording.
  20. Customer can meet future requirements by adding, removing, or reconfiguring modules.
  21. Data storage to widely available CF card media.
  22. Up to 64 GByte CF card allows recording of one DVD quality video stream for 28 hours (two channels for 14 hours).
  23. All data time stamped and synchronised to 100 nSec accuracy at the front end.
  24. All bus data recorded regardless of errors, although errors are flagged.   (Often 1553 data has ringing or protocol errors.   Some systems will reject associated data)
  25. All channel parameters (e.g. data rates, termination, signal levels) independently selectable.
  26. Recorders totally self-calibrating from end-to-end - no time wasted, or costs incurred, setting up banks of potentiometers.
  27. File annotation selectable by user to uniquely identify recordings for each mission/aircraft (e.g. aircraft tail number).
  28. Event markers may be applied at any time by the user.
  29. Complete recorder set-ups may be stored to sixteen non-volatile RAM locations.   All set-ups readily recalled.   User defined DEFAULT set-up loaded at power-on.
  30. Configuration may be set so that recorder goes into RECORD upon application of aircraft power.
  31. Set-up also stored to any recording.   CF card may then be used to set up any recorder to the same configuration.
  32. Built-in Java applet allows you to set-up the Heim MDR from a web browser (via Ethernet) and provides an easy to use graphical user interface.   USB and serial ports also available for set-up.
  33. Local front panel allows set-up and visual display of system status.
  34. Discrete (TTL and switch closure) inputs/outputs for cockpit switches and status displays.
  35. High speed digital data transfer of data to PCs via CF card reader or Ethernet connection to the recorder chassis.
  36. Real-time data replay, display, and analysis systems available from commercial software enterprises supporting IRIG 106 Chapter 10 format.
  37. Replay/reconstruction systems from Heim allow data to be replayed in original format (e.g. as video, 1553, etc).
